SENIOR STUDY SKILLS WORKSHOP

The Study Centre also offers its well-known Senior Study Skills Workshop. The Workshop or Programme will prepare learners for matric and post-matric studies. It imparts good study habits and teaches students effective study techniques. Basically, the Programme teaches learners how to study. It will make studying easier and more enjoyable for learners, improve their concentration, help them to produce better results with less effort and save them study time. Studying and writing tests and exams will become stress-free and panic-free.

The workshop is aimed at learners from grade eight to tertiary level. (From 2013, the Study Centre will be introducing a Junior Study Skills Programme for grades 4 to 7 learners).

Since this programme is skills-based and not content-based, it does not matter which part of the year learners attend the workshop. Many learners commenced attending the workshop as late as November and early December and continued with it in January of the following year. Obviously, the earlier they attend the workshop in their high school career, the better. Learners will have more time to master the skills. Remember, study skills are lifetime skills.

Study skills are vital for success both at school and certainly at tertiary level. As a matter of interest, the failure and drop-out rate at tertiary level is over 50% and the two main reasons for this (besides the socio-economic reasons) are the lack of effective study skills and the selection of inappropriate or unsuitable careers (and hence courses of study).

The workshop is conducted over five Saturday mornings from 9.00am to 13.15pm. The price of the Workshop is R2 500 per student/learner. The price includes the following:

1. Five  Saturday mornings workshop (One of the Saturday mornings is a Refresher which is normally held six to eight weeks after the main workshop)
2. A CD consisting of the following:

(i) A software called ‘Learning Style Profiler’ which identifies a student’s natural or dominant style and makes recommendations on improving their dominant style and developing their non-dominant learning styles

(ii) An e-book entitled ‘Secrets to Easy and Successful Studying’. The e-book is a detailed set of notes on all the modules covered in the workshop. It also includes topics which cannot be traversed at the workshop because of time constraints – topics such as speaking and listening skills as well as lateral and logical thinking skills.

1. A Certificate of Attendance (which learners can include in their CV when applying for a place at tertiary level, a bursary, student loan or even a job etc.)
2. A telephonic helpline
