Study Centre (SC) was established in 1989 specifically to teach students how to study. While education institutions and training providers teach content, the Study Centre teaches skills and techniques; the former focus on what to learn, the latter focuses on how to learn.  Study skills help to bridge gap between secondary and tertiary levels. 

Initially, the Study Centre conducted Study Skills workshops which have been attended by over 20 000 learners from grade 8 to post-matric level.  Many of them are successful professionals today.  Even educators attended the workshops and realized the value of the material to learners.

Parents from other parts of the country where our workshops were not held then requested us to publish our material in print form so that they could purchase it for their children. Thereafter, we transferred the material to CDs.

The basic principle on which the study skills course is built on the fact that a student’s full time occupation is to study, yet students have never been taught HOW to study!  Motor mechanics are taught how to repair vehicles, plumbers and carpenters are provided with the skills to practise their trades, educators are taught how to teach, professionals in the different disciplines are given the skills and knowledge to practise their professions and so on.  Furthermore, we will not throw our children into the swimming pool without first teaching them how to swim or put our children behind the wheel of a car without first instructing them on how to drive. Yet we throw our children, whose full time occupation is to study, into schools without teaching HOW to study!

The Study Centre’s Junior (grades 4 to 7) and Senior Study Skills Programmes (grade 8 to post-matric) aspire to remedy this situation by teaching learners many of the well-established study skills and techniques. Both Study Skills Programmes are supported by a software called a Learning Style Profiler which identifies a student’s natural or dominant learning style/s.

With the volume and complexity of information that the 21st century student is confronted with, study skills and methods are absolutely vital skills to have.

The Study Centre now also develops and markets content subjects such as Maths.

NB      All the Study Centre’s programmes are marketed under the ‘SUPER CHAMPION LEARNER’ SERIES.

NB      Except for the Maths CD, you do not require a computer at home. The CD/s can be used at an internet café while the e-books can be printed at work or even at the internet café.

The SC is assisted (both full and part time) by a number of academics, many of whom have doctorate and masters degrees and who have themselves supervised and promoted doctorate and masters students.
